East-Kazakhstan region

East Kazakhstan - is the territory that connects South Siberia and the Altai with Semirechye and Central Asia. Due to the geographical position, it played an important role in the historical development of the tribes and peoples of Western Asia at all times.

Archaeological excavations show that the region was inhabited since ancient times. This is evidenced by the traces of ancient mining developments, irrigation canals, and the ruins of numerous structures preserved in the Altai, in the Zaisan hollow, on the slopes of the Saur and Tarbagatai ranges.

Stronger than death' Monument

East-Kazakhstan region

The monument, installed in memory of the victims of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site and called 'Stronger than Death,' was solemnly opened in Semipalatinsk in August 2001. It is located a few kilometers away from the city center, on the island of Polkovniki. The monument was created by the architect Shot Valikhanov. The monument 'Stronger than Death' has immortalized the memory of an important page in the history of Semipalatinsk - the years of the nuclear test site, closed in accordance with the decree of the President of Kazakhstan in 1991. The most active tests were carried out here between 1949 and 1963, when new weapons were being developed. As a consequence of this activity, huge territories in Kazakhstan and the Altai Territory as well as people, who died as a result of nuclear tests, were contaminated by fallout from polluted precipitation.
